Will Songs of Ascent be released in 2010

U2’s ever present Paul McGuinness has told Rolling Stone Magazine that there won’t be a new U2 album out before the U2 360 tour resumes in June, but that it’s “increasingly likely” a new album will be out before the end of the year. That’s the word from RS’ Associate Editor Brian Hiatt, who posted this earlier today on Twitter:

“No new U2 album by June, band manager Paul McGuinness tells me in the new RS: “However, before the end of the year is increasingly likely”

U2's Rose Bowl Concert to be on DVD

U2360° At The Rose Bowl will be released in the UK on DVD and Blu-ray by Mercury Records on June 7, and in the US on June 3, 2010.

U2360° At The Rose Bowl was the penultimate gig of last year's U2360° Tour in support of their Grammy nominated album No Line on The Horizon. The Rose Bowl performance was the band's biggest show of 2009 and U2's biggest ever US show, with a live audience in excess of 97,000.

The show was also streamed across seven continents via YouTube. The first ever live streaming of a full-length stadium concert, U2360° at the Rose Bowl had over 10 million views on the channel in one week.

Shot entirely in HD, the concert was filmed with 27 cameras and directed by Tom Krueger who had previously worked on U23D, the first live action 3D concert movie taken from U2's Vertigo Tour.
Available in standard and 2-disc deluxe DVD formats (see below), U2360° At The Rose Bowl will also be U2's first concert available in Blu-ray. The deluxe formats and the Blu-ray will feature a new documentary called Squaring the Circle: Creating U2360° with new interviews from U2, Paul McGuinness and the team behind the touring production.

Celebrity Train spotting - Danny Devito, Paris Hilton, Dave Stewart, Alyssa Milano, Cindy Crawford. Bono did a shout out to famed astronaut Buzz Aldrin who was also present. Bono also wished The Edge's son, Levi, a happy birthday.

Bono called The Edge a 'Zen Presbyterian' and Adam, Clark Gable as he was often gone with the wind...

The Black Eyed Peas opening set was notable for GNR / Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash turning up to play a wild version of Sweet Child of Mine.

U2 Chicago Set List Night Two

Night Two of U2's stay at Soldier Field in Chicago proved a nice night for fans as U2 did a big reveal of a never played before song, Your Blue Room. Astronauts from the International Space Station recited the final, spoken words of the song (via pre-recorded video, words orignally spoken by Adam Clayton).

In some kind of all things being equal reaction, U2 dropped fan favourite Pride from the set list for the first time in a major tour concert since August 28, 2001.

U2 mixed the set list up slightly by playing One before Streets have No Name as part of a three-song medley, bridged by Bono singing the classic hymn 'Amazing Grace.'

U2 biblical references in their Lyrics

U2 are well known as being a band with christian roots. Not a 'praise the baby jesus' kind of band but a group of individuals who have questioned the belief systems they were raised in. Sometimes they champion them too such as with Bono's 'Coexist' message.

Bono, as U2's main lyricist, has continually made lyrical references to things religious and biblical in the songs of U2.

Many of U2 lyrics are open to intereptation as to what they actuallly mean perhaps thus expanding U2's universal appeal. On one hand a fan gets a rock song about love, on the other a different fan finds a means of spiritual expression. As with all good song writing, the final interepreter is the listener.

Here's a list of biblical references U2 have made in their lyrics. It was compiled by Angela Pancella from the fantastic U2 resource, @U2. I've taken the list and made some changes to the links, but the content is still mostly based upon Angela' work.

I do note that some of the supposed bible references are tenuous. If Bono is talking bout a blind man it doesn't necessarily follow he was refering to a blind man in the bible...they are perhaps more likley coincidences, but as I said, it's about lyrical interpretation!

"Tomorrow"

"Who tore the curtain? Who was it for?" -- Matthew 27:51: [The Crucifixion] "At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split."
The door imagery and "open up to the Lamb of God" is from Rev 3:20 when Jesus says: "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will eat with him, and he with me."

"October"

"And kingdoms rise and kingdoms fall" -- this one may be a bit of a stretch, but Psalm 46:6: "Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts."

"With a Shout"

"With a shout" -- Psalm 47:5 "God has gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet." Also I think there is an overall reference to the Psalms of Ascent, which were chanted by pilgrims on the way up the hill to Jerusalem, e.g. Psalm 122 "I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD. Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem."

"I Threw a Brick Through a Window"

"No one is blinder than he who will not see" -- John 9:40-41 "And some of the Pharisees who were with Jesus heard these words, and said to him, Are we blind also? Jesus said to them, If you were blind, you would have no sin: but now that you claim to see, your sin remains."

"Stranger In a Strange Land"

The entire song makes allusion to the Emmaus story from Luke 24, where the risen Jesus appears as a stranger, but miraculously cannot be recognized until he offers bread to the two disciples who have invited him in. The song paraphrases their exclamation when they realize who they have been with -- "They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?" ("I watched as he watched us. The way it was when he was with us") Though it is late night, they don't go to sleep but instead walk 9 miles back to Jerusalem to tell the others what they saw. ("They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, 'It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.' Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.") This parallels: "But I couldn't sleep after what I saw: I wrote this letter to tell you the way I feel. I wish you were here to see what I could see."

"Trenches dug within our hearts, And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart" -- Matthew 10:35: "For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."
"Wipe the tears from your eyes" -- Revelation 21:4: "He will wipe every tear from their eyes..."
"We eat and drink while tomorrow they die" A brilliant ironic take on I Cor 15:32 "If the dead are not raised, let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die." The "how long" cry is too frequent in the Bible to cover in full, but here are some prominent examples:
Ps 6:3 "My soul is in anguish. How long, O LORD, how long?" (This is the same line Bono says he used in "40," too.)
Ps 94:3 "How long will the wicked, O LORD, how long will the wicked be jubilant?"

"Justify" is a key verb in Christian theology referring to how the grace of Jesus makes believers right with God.

Although I'm sure there are several layers of meaning to this image, I cannot imagine someone who knows the Bible as well as Bono describing an ideal place in terms of "streets" without thinking of the description of the great street in the kingdom of Heaven -- Revelation 22:1 "Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city." And 22:21 "The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass."

"I have spoken with the tongue of angels" -- 1 Corinthians 13:1: "If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal."

This obviously has a literal meaning in the song, but it is also a very frequently used phrase in the Bible and it has some positive and some negative meanings. Among the ones that fit the song most are: Deut 29:17 You saw among them their detestable images and idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold. Ps 133:15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by the hands of men. Zephaniah 1:18 Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the Lords's wrath.

"Love Rescue Me"

"Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow/Yet I will fear no evil/I have cursed they rod and staff/They no longer comfort me..." -- Psalm 23 -- "Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side with your rod and your staff that give me courage."

"When Love Comes to Town"

Tarheel Tim's taken care of this one by pointing out elements of the song (the moon, Johnny, living underground, running away from what you don't understand, belly dancing, even the title phrase) that are also in Oscar Wilde's play "Salome." The Biblical story of Salome can be found in Mark 6: 17-29. The Lord also works in mysterious ways eh Bono?

Another possible title for this song, according to an interview with Bono in the book Race of Angels, was "The Preacher." Though no lines correspond exactly, the spirit of the song echoes the entire book of Ecclesiastes (also sometimes called "The Preacher"). For instance: "I went out there in search of experience/to taste and to touch and to feel as much as a man can before he repents" and Ecclesiastes 11:9: "Rejoice, O young man, while you are young, and let your heart be glad in the days of your youth. (Now this one has an unusual history. The first time I heard Bono talking about "putting one's head over the parapet" was in an interview about the Million Dollar Hotel. He was talking about the necessity for rock musicians to take risks that would leave them vulnerable. It was only because this was in the context of a movie about a man jumping from a roof that it was clear he was referencing this verse -- that and the fact the word "parapet" doesn't show up that often in the Bible.)

"Levitate"

"Spirit come on down" -- stories of the Holy Spirit coming down from heaven can be found in several places: see Luke 3:21-22 and Acts 2:1-4.

Rolling Stone 5 Star Review of NLOTH

For the big album reviews, Rolling Stone lines up their man David Fricke. He recently gave the GNR album Chinese Democracy a solid going over. Here's some of how he describes U2's No Line on the Horizon.

'"I was born to sing for you/I didn't have a choice but to lift you up," Bono declares early on this album, in a song called "Magnificent." He does it in an oddly low register, a heated hush just above the shimmer of the Edge's guitar and the iron-horse roll of bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. Bono is soon up in thin air with those familiar rodeo yells, on his way to the chorus, which ends with him just singing the word "magnificent," repeating it with relish, stretching the syllables."

A happy lead in then...

"But he does it not in self-congratulation, more like wonder and respect, as if in middle age, on his band's 11th studio album, he still can't believe his gift — and luck. Bono knows he was born with a good weapon for making the right kind of trouble: the clean gleam and rocket's arc of that voice. "It was one dull morning/I woke the world with bawling," he boasted in "Out of Control," written by Bono on his 18th birthday and issued on U2's Irish debut EP."

A hint of a critque knowing all about Bono...

He is still singing about singing, all over No Line on the Horizon, U2's first album in nearly five years and their best, in its textural exploration and tenacious melodic grip, since 1991's Achtung Baby. "Shout for joy if you get the chance," Bono commands, in a text-message cadence and drill sergeant's bark, in "Unknown Caller." He leads by example in the ham-with-wry pop of "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" — "Listen for me/I'll be shouting/Shouting to the darkness" — then demands his piece of the din in the glam-fuzz shindig "Get on Your Boots": "Let me in the sound!...Meet me in the sound!" God, guilt, love, sin, terrorism and transcendence — Bono juggles them all here, with the usual cracks at his own hubris. ("Stand up to rock stars," he warns in "Stand Up Comedy." "Be careful of small men with big ideas.")

And there you have it the best album since Achtung Baby and 5 stars with it!.

U2 Drummer Larry Mullen was interviewed by Sean O'Hagan (and the rest of U2) for the Guardian newspaper.

Larry is U2's biggest self critic so it's pleasing to hear:

'The work we did in Fez was the most joyous and liberating part of the whole album process. It was what I had always imagined being in U2 would be about: just playing music for the joy of it with no real end in sight.'

The U2 rumour mill has cranked into over drive with whispers that the album cover art for No Line on the Horizon will be 'The Lugurian Sea', a picture by an artist called Hiroshi Sugimoto.

As you can see it’s a greyscale image of an ocean with no line on its horizon. It could not be more of a contrast from Actung Baby!

Every Breaking Wave is the long talked about but as yet unreleased song left over from the sessions of the U2 album, No Line on the Horizon.

While talk is cheap, U2 have gone on and on about Every Breaking Wave. It is expected that it will eventually be released when U2 get into gear and finish the oft talked about album, Songs of Ascent.

Bono and co have talked about how they will record the the follow up album in the near future. I'm not holding my breath. U2 are booked to tour till at least the end of 2010. Maybe they will do a Zooropa on us and record in between concert dates. Again, no breath holding as Bono and the Edge are trying to lock down the Spider Man musical, Turn Off the Dark.

This song will probably end up on the Songs of Ascent album.

So what actually happened? U2 debuted Every Breaking Wave during a gig in Helsinki.

Winter is a song from the No Line on the Horizon recording sesssions. Winter appears in the war film Brothers at the request of director Jim Sheridan, and it plays over the closing credits. Several different versions of the Winter have been recorded, including an uptempo rock arrangement on Linear and a slower acoustic version in Brothers.

Bono wrote the lyrics in one night and they were revised just once after that. Tobey Maguire's character Captain Sam Cahill was the inspiration for the lyric, with the band noting that the focus on "intense hidden emotion" and the secrets he held inside "was a jumping off point, thematically." Bono noted that Sheridan wanted a "complex song for a complex character" and so the band wrote two songs: "Winter" and "White as Snow". While "White as Snow" focuses more on the relationship between the Cahill brothers, "Winter" is a "more universal song about the experience of the armed forces in Afghanistan.

No Line on the Horizon' album title confirmed

No Line On The Horizon, the new studio album from U2, will be released on Monday 2nd March 2009.

The album was written and recorded in various locations, No Line On The Horizon is the group’s 12th studio album and is their first release since the 9 million selling album How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, released in late 2004.

Sessions for No Line On The Horizon began last year in Fez, Morocco, continued in the band’s own studio in Dublin, before moving to New York’s Platinum Sound Recording Studios, and finally being completed at Olympic Studios in London.

The album calls on the production talents of long-time collaborators Brian Eno and Danny Lanois, with additional production by Steve Lillywhite.

Legend Irish rockers U2 have finally confirmed the name of their new studio album as No Line On The Horizon. and It will be will released worldwide in early March 2009.

The quartet's 12th studio album was originally expected to be released by the end of this year, but the band announced in September that it would keep writing more tunes. Recording took place in Morocco, Dublin, New York and London.

Interscope Records will release No Line On The Horizon internationally on March 2, and a day later in North America.

It marks the follow-up to How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, which was released in late 2004 and went on to sell 9 million copies worldwide, according to Interscope. It also garnered U2 their second album of the year Grammy, following 1987's The Joshua Tree.

The new album was produced by long-time collaborators Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, with additional production by Steve Lillywhite. Tunes recorded in 2006 with producer Rick Rubin, the man behind Johnny Cash's comeback, have been jettisoned.

Tour plans have not been announced. The Vertigo world tour for the last album ran from March 2005 to December 2006.

No Line on the Horizon Album Track Listing

U2 have confirmed the name of its new album as indeed being No Line on the Horizon. This is no surprise as the interweb has been alive with chatter at about the album name since the middle of 2008.

U2's twelfth studio album is set to be released in February 2009. In July 2006 it was reported by U2.com in an email to subscribers that U2 has started recording for a new album.^[1] Currently, the album's working title is No Line on the Horizon. However, the band has not yet decided as to whether or not it will be the final title.

U2 are a rock band from Dublin, Ireland. The band consists of Bono (vocals and guitar), The Edge (guitar, keyboards, and vocals), Adam Clayton (bass guitar) and Larry Mullen, Jr. (drums and percussion).

U2 formed in 1976 when the members were teenagers with limited musical proficiency. By the mid-1980s, however, the band had become a top international act, noted for their anthemic sound, Bono's impassioned vocals, and The Edge's textural guitar playing. Their success as a live act was greater than their success at selling records until their 1987 album The Joshua Tree increased the band's stature "from heroes to superstars," according to Rolling Stone. U2 responded to the dance and alternative rock revolutions, and their own sense of musical stagnation by reinventing themselves with their 1991 album Achtung Baby and the accompanying Zoo TV Tour. Similar experimentation continued for the rest of the 1990s. Since 2000, U2 have pursued a more traditional sound that retains the influence of their previous musical explorations.
